An Overview of Our Last Eight Weeks: Being in Military Public Affairs

Source: DVIDS

We have talked about a lot of great topics in this blog thus far!

Let’s just break down this week with an overview of some major points we have discussed thus far for you potential or current military communicators.

For starters, technology is changing. We as military communicators must adapt! But we must always refer back to the creed of military public affairs: abiding by the command message.

What is the command message? It is simply tailored communication delivered by the highest-ranking officer at your unit that is designed to reach either your internal audience (military community) or your external audience (civilians) – or both!

Every piece of content you create (whether it’s video, press releases, social media posts, feature stories, graphic design, etc.) must have a focus on the command message.

Today, we are also in a world of evolving social media. This is where people receive news and information these days as we’ve discussed throughout the blog thus far. Younger people, too, will become an increasing important demographic for military communicators. Because this country is faced with a military recruitment crisis, every branch of service has added pressure to create content that reaches younger Americans.

That’s were social media can come in handy. Using the new and latest features of social media platforms will only help you deliver your content to the right people at the most opportune time. For instance, platforms like Instagram offer Reels, which allow you to create short-form video content in a trendy manner. Facebook also offers this with their short-form video platform known as Stories. YouTube also has a short-form video platform called Shorts.

These are all just a few examples of innovative ways you can spread your command message to your audiences across social media. You must also remember, though, that you are not a civilian journalist, as we discussed a few weeks back. There is no room for editorializing in military public affairs. Our goal is maximum discloser, minimum delay – all while sticking to facts and facts alone.

Military public affair is an exciting and rewarding career field that allows you to go where the action is in your respected branch of service. It is also a field that can help your branch recruit more members by creating content that shares the story of your branch.

Be the storytellers of your branch! Reach your target audience with engaging content by catching up on the latest trends of strategic communication. Emerging media will only help you deliver information to your audience!
